Christmas Island Frigate

Critically endangered, the Christmas Island Frigate endures many threats including hunting and fishing net entanglement, as well as invasive ants, cats and rats. It breeds every other year producing one egg. The hatchling requires fifteen months of parenting. Breeding and survival are low.

The male Christmas Island Frigate is predominantly black with a glossy green, blue and purple sheen to the long feathers on his head and back. He also sports a spectacular red gular sac which he inflates and drums with his bill to attract a mate.

Frigatebirds are capable of staying in flight for several days and nights. They use thermals to soar up to as much as 2.5 kilometers high before gliding downwards and climbing again in succession, only occasionally flapping their wings.

What is Giclée?

Giclée is an excellent quality reproduction of a painting. A Giclée print is capable of reproducing the exact colour of the original. A Giclée reproduction is so sensitive that it even records the texture of brush strokes and the uneven surface of paint. A Giclée is printed on canvas which is stretched over a wood frame. Because it is printed on canvas, and because of the precise reproduction of colour, brush strokes and paint texture, a Giclée print is almost indistinguishable from the original. The quality of a Giclée print is far superior to all other forms of reproduction printing.
