Grizzly Bear Paw Drum

Image 1:
At first glance you will most likely see the underside of a Grizzly Bear Paw with five red claws across the top. The five red, black and white ovals, as well as the larger white oval, represent the pads on the bottom of the foot. Look closer and you will see a Grizzly Bear’s face. Two of the foot pads contain the bear’s eyes. The larger central white oval foot pad represents the bear’s nose. Below the nose can be seen the bear’s mouth with jowls drooping around the chin. The grizzly bear is a symbol of strength, power and honor.

Image 2:
Turn the drum sideways. At the top, facing to the right is a coyote’s head in profile. The large black oval represents his nostril. Below the nostril, the white shapes with white and red outline represent his snarling mouth with stylized teeth. To the left of the nostril, the white oval represents his eye. To the left of the eye, the bear’s claw becomes the coyote’s ear.
The coyote symbolizes a trickster who is mischievous, deceitful and greedy. The next claw down, below the coyote’s ear, represents the beak of a raven. To the right of the beak, the bear’s eye becomes the raven’s eye. The raven symbolizes knowledge, creativity and mischief.

The coyote and the raven images are replicated in mirror image on both sides of the bear paw.

Image 3:
I fastened large brass tacks evenly around the outer rim of the drum. Various North American indigenous groups have a long history of attaching tacks to various objects such as war clubs, rattles, gunstocks, belts, drums, wood bowls and more. Brass tacks became highly prized and very popular among North American Indigenous groups after they became available through trade in the early 1800’s

I can create a custom drum specifically for you. I have a variety of sizes and many drum face images for you to choose from. The embellishments will vary depending upon what I have available, but I can assure you, they will be exotic materials. If you are interested in purchasing a drum, or any of Mayo’s art, please contact me.
